Army Sgt. Rigoberto Luviano, a native of Lexington, N.C., holds his daughter Aura, 2 years old, after a ceremony awarding him the Purple Heart at the Warrior Transition Battalion-Alaska on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Jan. 16, 2014. Luviano was wounded in combat while deployed in 2013 with the 109th Transportation Company, 2nd Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Alaska, at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and is currently assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion-Alaska while he is recuperating and receiving treatment for his injuries. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
