Chemical Warfare Service - Drills - Masks - Improved German mask adopted by Uncle Sam
Summary
Original Caption: Improved German mask adopted by Uncle Sam. Representative Heintz, of Cincinnati, Ohio, demonstrating the new gas mask that was adopted by the War Department for the use of our forces on the firing line. The mask is similar to the model used by Germany, being designed after a German mask found on a French battlefield. The bag attachment, an American improvement, is an air filter which will purify even the most noxious gas laden air and insure the wearer a sufficient supply of pure air to sustain him, even though a gas attack might be of several hours duration. Representative Heintz is the second member of Congress to enlist with the military branch of the service for the war, Augusus P. Gardner being the first.
