ED10-0309-11 ON ITS WAY - NASA's DC-8 flying science laboratory departs Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, Calif., during a science instrument checkout flight for the Fall 2010 Operation Ice Bridge environmental science mission. The converted jetliner and its team of scientists and flight crew were scheduled to fly up to 145 hours over Antarctica, with its suite of instruments gauging changes in ice sheets, fast-moving glaciers, sub-glacial lakes and sea ice thickness.
