Fire Controlman 3rd Class Shane Nichlos(far) and Fire Controlman 3rd Class Tan Ngo (near), both assigned to the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), guide a Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) in to its launcher. Essex, commanded by Capt. Troy Hart, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed expeditionary strike group and serves as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
