Caption: Plaquemines Parish, La. , March 20, 2009 -- A 15ft storm surge and 9ft residual floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina damaged the interior of the building. Winds from the hurricane caused the water tower located next the auditorium to collapse and destroyed the entire roof as well as the interior of the auditorium. The roof needed to be replaced and the interior (including the wood flooring) needed to be gutted down to the brick shell and rebuilt. The building was built in the early 1940's and has been deemed eligible for the National Registrar for Historic Places. All damages were repaired in-kind or to the Secretary of the Interiors standards for treatment of historic properties. Plaquemines Parish worked hand in-hand with FEMA's Environmental & Historic Preservation to rebuild the auditorium to pre-existing condition. The Buras Auditorium will serve the same purpose as it did pre-Katrina. The Auditorium is used for stage shows/performances, community center, meetings, parish offices, weddings, and parties.
