Marine veteran Cpl. Mark O'Brien competes in the compound open archery competition during the 2012 Warrior Games aboard the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 2. O'Brien took home the bronze medal with a score of 110-102.
O'Brien dropped out of college shortly after 9/11 to serve in the Marine Corps. He was a member of 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines and did two tours of duty in Iraq. The first was part of the initial invasion in March 2003. The second was to Al Anbar province, where he was shot with an armor-piercing, rocket-propelled, grenade only 68 days into his tour. After many surgeries and 10 months of intense rehab, he was medically retired by the Marine Corps.
