Rct. Jenna A. Shuman performs a rear choke on Rct. Madison P. Taylor, both with Platoon 4008, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, during martial arts qualification Jan. 14, 2016, on Parris Island, S.C. All recruits must earn a tan belt, the first level of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, in order to graduate. Schuman, 21, from Catlin, Ill., and Taylor, 18, from Fulton, Ind., are scheduled to graduate March 11, 2016. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
