Description: Payload bay (PLB) equipment and experiments (front to back) include Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS) 01 secured in keel bridge fitting, Materials Experiment Assembly (MEA) mounted on Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications (OSTA) 2 Mission Peculiar Equipment Support System (MPESS), spacecraft sunshield closed over thermal-covered airborne support equipment (ASE), and remote manipulator system (RMS) arm stowed on port side longeron. Get away special (GAS) canister mounted on starboard longeron and six GAS canisters on port side longeron appear in foreground. GAS canister lid is open on G305 - Space Ultraviolet Radiation Environment (SURE) instrument developed by the Naval Research Laboratory. In the background, orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pods and vertical tail are highlighted against Earth's surface.
