Soldiers from the 2d Battalion, 1ST Infantry Regiment, Fort Wainwright, Alaska, observe their sector of fire as they hold their fighting positions while assaulting the village of Simpsonville, Alaska during NORTHERN EDGE '98, an annual Joint Chiefs of STAFF winter exercise involving air and ground units of all services. The men are wearing winter combat gear, carrying M-16s as well as MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Simulation) equipment on their bodies as well as on the helmets. The MILES receivers will beep when targeted by a weapon equipped with the MILES laser emitter, indicating a kill or wounding of the wearer
