STAFF Sergeant (SSGT) Robert Taverna, USAF, 514th Security Forces Squadron (SFS), 514th Air Mobility Wing (AMW), McGuire AFB, New Jersey (NJ), is greeted by Ringmaster Kevin Vernardos, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, during a ceremony held on March 6, 2002, at the Continental Arena in Newark, New Jersey (NJ). The Ringling Brothers Circus presented a plaque to SSGT Traverna in recognition of his efforts at Ground Zero and service to the nation. SSGT Taverna, a New York City police officer in his civilian capacity, worked rescue, recovery, security and various other assignments at Ground Zero from 11 September until he was activated by the Reserve on 19 November

On September 11, 2001, two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
