Chicago, IL ? (Dec 1, 2007) -- The Chicago Christmas Ship, AKA the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB-30) arrives at Chicago?s Navy Pier to deliver Christmas trees to needy Chicago-area families. The crew of the Mackinaw brings the trees from Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin for distribution to more than a thousand disadvantaged families. The Chicago Christmas Ship Committee, which purchased the trees, represents diverse aspects of the Chicago boating community such as the Coast Guard Auxiliary, International Shipmaster's Association and the Chicago Yachting Association. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad. All of these materials are preserved because they are important to the workings of Government, have long-term research worth, or provide information of value to citizens.
