U.S. Airmen watch a missing man formation at a memorial for 1st Lt. David Schmitz, 77th Fighter Squadron pilot, at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, July 10, 2020. Schmitz was a prior enlisted C-17 Globemaster III loadmaster who commissioned to follow his dreams of becoming a pilot. The missing man formation is an aerial salute done in memory of a fallen service member, where four aircraft fly in formation at first and then one separates from the group, representing the missing member.
