US Navy (USN) Commander (CDR) Mark H. Scovill, Commanding Officer, USN Whidbey Island Class Dock Landing Ship USS TORTUGA (LSD 46), walks door-to-door in New Orleans convincing stranded Hurricane Katrina survivors to take refuge aboard his ship. The TORTUGA, currently moored at Naval Support Activity New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), is providing hot meals, showers, and beds for hurricane survivors. The Navy is contributing to the humanitarian assistance operations led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in conjunction with the Department of Defense (DoD)
