Lieutenant Colonel Mike Ely, the former 74th Fighter Squadron commander, makes the signal known worldwide by F-16 pilots as "Makin Snakes" as he taxies his F-16C, tail no. 90-0776, out of its parking space. The F-16 known officially as the Fighting Falcon is commonly referred to by pilots and ground crews as the "Viper." This was one of the last three F-16C "Fighting Falcon" aircraft previously assigned to the 23rd Wing, to depart Pope for their new squadron and station at Cannon AFB, N.M. The 74th will remain at Pope and fly the A-10 Thunderbolt II in its new mission

Twenty-one C-130Es from the 43rd Airlift Wing from Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina, line the taxiway at Camp Mackall Air Field, south of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Almost 1,000 personnel deployed with the aircraft and set up a tent city beside the strip to test the bare base operating capabilities of the Wing. The tents are erected in close proximity to the aircraft both for logistical and security reasons. Flight crews and maintenance personnel can walk to the aircraft, and the same forces can guard the entire encampment. Special Forces units from Fort Bragg performed enemy attack and perimeter probe exercises throughout the deployment for Exercise GRYPHON WARRIOR 99-01

The Fighting Gryphon of the 43rd Airlift Wing. When the 23rd Wing Flying Tigers was re-designated the 43rd Airlift Wing, the Operations Group Commander, Colonel Gordon Ettenson, wanted a distinctive marking to replace the shark teeth of the Flying Tigers that were being removed. A World War II veteran of the then 43rd Bomb Group who attended the reactivation of the 43rd designation carried with him a leather-covered flight log from the 43rd Bomb Group, circa 1943. Embossed in leather front was a rough depiction of a gryphon (or griffin). Dave Davenport, a photographer with the Pope Air Force Base Visual Information Support Center, reworked the logo into the design applied to the 43rd...

As a crane lifts the remains of a crashed MH-53J Pave Low IIIE helicopter, an M246 all-terrain truck equipped with a boom and winch controls the rate of roll via the cables seen leading off to the right, while personnel pull on the orange nylon strap attached to the sponson on the bottom to swing the aircraft upright. The helicopter crashed near Camp Mackall Army Air Field, North Carolina on the night of June 2, 1999. Air Force Special Operations Command requested that the aircraft be recovered and returned to Hurlburt Field, Florida

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
