The aircraft, which has served as the premiere medical evacuation aircraft for the Air Force for 35 years, was retired in July 2003. With Mount Fuji in the background, US Air Force (USAF) Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Jeff Mintzlaff, Commander, 30th Airlift Squadron (AS), Yokota Air Base (AB), Japan, conducts a pre-flight check on his USAF C-9A Nightingale aircraft for the final time this Sunday morning. The USAF C-9 served as the premiere medical evacuation aircraft for the Air Force for 35 years was retired in July 2003. LTC Minzlaff will fly the plane to the "boneyard" at Davis- Monthan, Air Force Base (AFB), Arizona (AZ), for retirement.
