Ceremonies - Navy & Marines - The Return of the Victory Feelt to New York. With clocklike precision, which is so characteristic of the United States Navy, America's majestic fleet moved up the Hudson River through a heavy snowstorm. After the review of the fleet by Secretary Daniels, half of the sailorscame ashore to partake in a parade down Fifth Avenue where they were cheered by thousands of people. The photo shows a division passing the reviewing stand in front of the Public Library. Secretary Daniels in a silk hat can be seen near the center post

Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, May 1916 - Highlanders, Gayly kilted, arrive in New York to spur British recruiting. Two hundred and fifty Gordon and McLean Highlanders brought Fifth Avenue to its street windowns to view the passing of the Scotsman as they swung down the thoroughfare headed by their bagpipers. They were the chief attraction of British Recruiting Week beginning July 16, 1917. A big rally on Friday night at Madison Square Garden wound up the weeks activities. Lord Northcliffe and James M. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
