Shortly after 8 AM on September 11, 2001 in an attempt to frighten the American people, five members of Al-Qaida, a group of fundamentalist Islamic Muslims, hijacked American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757-200, from Dulles International Airport just outside Washington DC. About 9:30 AM they flew the aircraft and 64 passengers into the side of the Pentagon. The impact destroyed or damaged four of the five "rings" in that section that circle the building. [Hurricane Katrina/Hurricane Rita] Baton Rouge, LA, May 24, 2006 - The command room overlooking the main floor at the Louisiana State Emergency Operations Center is occupied by state emergency officials during a 2 day, full-scale exercise simulating  the pre and post landfall of a hurricane. LOS ANGELES (Dec. 11, 2006)  Electronics Technician 1ST Class John Brooks, assigned to the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS LOS ANGELES (SSN 688), participates in the Navy's Caps for Kids program at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital. Crewmembers from the LOS ANGELES visited and handed out ball caps and photos of their submarine to almost 50 children on the 6th floor surgery unit. This is the first port call the LOS ANGELES, based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, has made to the city it was named after. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
