ARMED FORCES DAY 2000. SALUTING AMERICAS BEST 50TH ANNIVERSARY 1950 2000. In honor of the 50th Anniversary when President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration was a result of the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense. Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May

Former EF-111 "Raven Pilot", CAPT. Clyde Beattie does a preflight inspection of his U. S. Navy EA-6B "Prowler" at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Wash. As a result of the Navy, Air Force and the Secretary of Defense's decision to consolidate the airborne threat radar jamming mission, the Air Force is drawing down the EF-111 Raven and joining forces with the Navy to stand up five squadrons of EA-6B Prowlers. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
