American Red Cross - In the Zone of Advance - Activities - American Red Cross Dugout near front. These soldiers have just come out of a Red Cross dugout near the new front lines in the St. Mihiel salient. They have their hands full of doughnuts, cigarettes and magazines. This outpost outfit followed a few miles behind the fightersin the advance. When the American infantryman dug in, the Red Cross men dug in also under a ruined house, started their fires, and within a few hours were serving thousands of weary but enthusiastic Americans with hot drinks and other comforts

Charles Dana Gibson, chairman of the division of pictorial publicity of the Committee on Public Information, gave a luncheon in Washington to some of the government's leading publicity men and those who are making Uncle Sam's posters. In this group,  from left to right (without regard to rows) are: D.W. Lee, Herbert Adams, Prof. Richard Rice, Library of Congress; M.L. Blumenthal, H. Devitt Welsh, Oliver Dennet Grover, George Creel, Frederick Keppell, (at top) W.E. Hall (in stripped suit), Edward N. hurley, (with hands folded). Back of Mr. Hurley with gray hat, is Joseph Pennell, whose sketches have been one of the war's best contributions to art. Back of him is Mr. Gibson and back of him R.D. Heini, editor of the Emergency Fleet News. Next to Mr. Hurley is Charles Piez, President of the Emergency Fleet Corporation; next to him Major Kendall Banning, above Major Banning, Joseph P. Tumulty, and back of him Dr. H.S. Garfield, Fuel Administrator. On the next step above is E.H. Blashfield, and on the top step M. American Red Cross - Vehicles - American Red Cross Garage, Southampton, England. One of oldest and most famous buildings in Southampton, built when King Canute defied the rising tide in Southampton. The building was orginally part of the city wall, from the top of which expert archers trained their arrows on the little bands of enemies who waged guerilla warfare in those days. In 13th Century this portion of the wall was set aside as the Wool Market and during the Napoleonic wars it was converted into a prison for French soldiers who fell into Wellington's hands

Mitchell, A.R.C, knew of problem and invented a can-opener that can be worked and with very little effort and leaves no jagged edges to hurt tender hands. Capt. Mitchell is here demonstrating the use of it. As fast as they can be made they are forwarded to the various canteens

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
