One of the most impressive scenes witnessed at any of the training camps where men of the National Army are being whipped into shape was enacted at Camp Upton, N.Y. when 300 foreign born members wearing the uniform were admitted to full citizenship. These men were granted full citizenship in order to give them every protection accorded a citizen of the United States. This photograph shows the men who were instrumental in aiding these foreign born fighters gain recognition as full fledged Americans. From left to right: front row. Heroes who marched and fought with the Gray, men who answered the Southland's call rallied under Old Glory in a great parade in Washington, D.C. Five thousand United Confederate veterans and 5,000 others marched in the parade. With the Stars and Stripes fluttering above the stars and bars still reverend but given way to a greater and mightier union. Two hundred United States Marines, veterans of the Nicaraguan, Haytian and Dominican campaigns, staged a sham battle in the very heart of Philadelphia, PA., to stimulate recruiting. Divided into defenders and attackers, the former using the ruins of the buildings which are being razed to make way for a park. The Marines Marines skirmishedfor two hours. The men were attired in field uniform loaded down with equipment, hauled field guns and light artillery as though the taking of the city depended upon their efforts. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
