Shown is a close-up of the uneven runway at Roberts International Airport, located outsi of Monrovia, Liberia. The runway has uneven concrete patchwork, that could possibly be a hazard for aircraft landing at the airport. The patchwork was laid on the runway after the original portion was torn out by government officials, because it was feared the runway was mined with land mines. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
