Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, May 1916 - Highlanders, Gayly kilted, arrive in New York to spur British recruiting. Two hundred and fifty Gordon and McLean Highlanders brought Fifth Avenue to its street windowns to view the passing of the Scotsman as they swung down the thoroughfare headed by their bagpipers. They were the chief attraction of British Recruiting Week beginning July 16, 1917. A big rally on Friday night at Madison Square Garden wound up the weeks activities. Lord Northcliffe and James M. Beck were the principal speakers. Photo shows the Highlanders, marching through the streets of New York City on their way to the 71st Regiment armory at 34th Street and Park Avenue

Airplanes - Historical - Trans-Atlantic plane being built at Bayonne, N.J. A hugh seaplane being built by the Witteman-Lewis Aircraft Co. to be piloted by Capt. Hugo Sunstedt the Sweedish Aviator (directly underneath the plane), for a transatlantic flight for the $50,000 Lord Northcliff price. Plane when rigged will have a wingspan of 100 feet and boat length of 72 feet. The boat is to be enclosed to protect against the cold and will carry three passengers besides the pilot. Its speed is 80 miles per hour and is of the pusher type, the propellers being in the rear of the plane. She will carry 700 gallons of gasoline

The new Handley-Page bombing airplane built by the Standard Aircraft Corporation, Elizabeth, N.J., which is of the type constructed to be able to fly to the fighting zones across the Atlantic. The plane is driven by twin Liberty motors 400 H.P. each, and has passed all the government tests. The new machine was driven by Lord William Simphill, of the British Service, accompanied by Major General William L. Henly, U.S.A., Chief of the Department of Military Aeronautics

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year. There are approximately 10 billion pages of textual records; 12 million maps, charts, and architectural and engineering drawings; 25 million still photographs and graphics; 24 million aerial photographs; 300,000 reels of motion picture film; 400,000 video and sound recordings; and 133 terabytes of electronic data. The Defense Visual Information Distribution Service provides a connection between world media and the American military personnel serving at home and abroad.
