With Mount Fuji in the background, US Air Force (USAF) Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Jeff Mintzlaff, Commander, 30th Airlift Squadron (AS), Yokota Air Base (AB), Japan, conducts a pre-flight check on his USAF C-9A Nightingale aircraft for the final time this Sunday morning. The USAF C-9 served as the premiere medical evacuation aircraft for the Air Force for 35 years was retired in July 2003. LTC Minzlaff will fly the plane to the "boneyard" at Davis- Monthan, Air Force Base (AFB), Arizona (AZ), for retirement. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
