Tornado - Joplin, Mo. , May 23, 2012 -- Lynn Onstot, Public Information Officer for the City of Joplin, speaks at the Longaberger Tree Dedication in Cunningham Park, Joplin, MO. The tree-dedication was part of Joplin's Day of Remembrance one year after a deadly tornado struck Joplin on May 22, 2011. The tornado killed 161 residents of Joplin, destroyed 25% of the town and generated $2. 2 billion in property damage. The tree-dedication recognized the planting of 40 trees donated by the Longaberger Foundation of Newark, Ohio. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
