CAPT. G. B. McEwen, commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10), watches as water pours from the damaged hull as the vessel stands in dry dock for repairs. The damage was inflicted by an Iraqi mine that the ship struck while serving as mine-clearing platform in the northern Persian Gulf on February 18 during Operation Desert Storm. The TRIPOLI was able to continue operations after damage control crews stopped the flooding caused by the explosion

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
