Armor - Armor - Designing armor for American Soldiers. In the Armorer's workshop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y. where, under the direction of Major Bashford Dean, Ord. Dept., U.S.A., and Curator of Armor at the Museum, armor for the American soldiers fighting in France is being designed. The suits of armor used in medieval times which many collectors have brought to the museum were carefully inspected and the good points brought to bear in fashioning this modern armor. The actual labor is being performed by Assistant Curator of Armor at the Museum, Daniel Tachaux and his assistant Sergt. Jacquest Bartel, of the Ord. Dept. american soldiers wearing this armor have gone into actual battle to test the effectiveness of the covering, and upon the result of the experiments depends whether the soldiers are to wear armor. Looking down Fourth Street just off Market Street, soldiers patrol the devastated area. An unidentified building is still standing. On April 18, 1906 at 5:15 AM a quake of 8.25 on the Richter scale hit San Francisco. Greater destruction came from the fires afterwards. The city burned for three days. The combination destroyed 490 city blocks and 25,000 buildings, leaving 250,000 homeless and killing between 450 and 700. Estimated damages, over $350 million

American Red Cross - Refugees - American Red Cross in North Russia. American soldiers and some children who they found starving near Archangel. When news was brought to camp, all soldiers chipped in to give out of their own supplies of hard tack, bully beef and bread, but that was not enough. One of the soldiers volunteered to nurse the dying mother and her little girl. Another soldier was sent at once to American Red Cross headquarters, a trip of an hour and a half from this small outpost camp, for expert help and a trained nurse. The nurse left at once with the soldier traveling throug a blinding snow storm to the little peasant cottage
