Tornado - Joplin, Mo. , May 20, 2012 -- The Joplin "Spirit Tree," one of the many trees in Joplin, Missouri that was destroyed by a deadly tornado that struck Joplin on May 22, 2011. The tornado killed 161 residents of Joplin, destroyed 25% of the town and generated $2. 2 billion in property damage. This 40 ft. tree on 20th Street near the Kansas City Southern Railway tracks has been painted with vibrant colors inspired by Native American spirit stick art. Napa, CA, August 28, 2014 ; Secondary steel structural support inside the historic Borreo Building on Third Street in the City of Napa, California, which survived a 6.0 earthquake on August 24, 2014 with minor damage. Named after the Borreo family who once owned the historic stone structure, the Italianate Renaissance Borreo Building was built in 1877 and constructed of native cut stone. The building was seismically stabilized and retrofitted with mitigation assistance from FEMA in 2001. A view of busy Market Street looking southward. This shot may be taken just before the earthquake hit. There is no date on the photo. On April 18, 1906 at 5:15 AM a quake of 8.25 on the Richter scale hit San Francisco. Greater destruction came from the fires afterwards. The city burned for three days. The combination destroyed 490 city blocks and 25,000 buildings, leaving 250,000 homeless and killing between 450 and 700. Estimated damages, over $350 million

The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
