Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , September 14, 2005 -- A 25 foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina wiped out the original Plaquemines Parish detention center and Sheriff's offices. It was a single story, 800-bed structure. It was declared 98% destroyed, making it eligible for replacement funding under FEMA's Public Assistance program.  The new detention center is being built back on the same 70-acre original site and will have the same inmate holding capacity, but is being built 18 feet above the ground. Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , August 29, 2008 -- A 25 foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina wiped out the original Plaquemines Parish detention center and Sheriff's offices. It was a single story, 800-bed structure. It was declared 98% destroyed, making it eligible for replacement funding under FEMA's Public Assistance program.  The new detention center is being built back on the same 70-acre original site and will have the same inmate holding capacity, but is being built 18 feet above the ground. Named after the Borreo family who once owned the historic stone structure, the Italianate Renaissance Borreo Building was built in 1877 and constructed of native cut stone. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
