The tornado killed 161 residents of Joplin, destroyed 25% of the town and generated $2. 2 billion in property damage. This 40 ft. tree on 20th Street near the Kansas City Southern Railway tracks has been painted with vibrant colors inspired by Native American spirit stick art. This steel cross is all that remains of the church, which was built in 1966 and dedicated on December 17, 1967. The cross is a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of Joplin. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
