The Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld, U.S. Secretary of Defense, lays a wreath in the Court of Honor at the North African American Cemetery and Memorial during his visit in Tunis, Tunisia on Feb. 12, 2006. There are 2,841 U.S. military buried at this 27-acre site north of Tunis. A U.S. Army Soldier assigned to the American Embassy in Tunis touches a headstone at the North African American Cemetery during a wreath-laying ceremony honoring American veterans on Nov. 17, 2006. The North Africa American Cemetery is one of 24 American cemeteries on foreign soil and covers 27 acres of land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Tunis. Established in 1948, the cemetery holds the graves of 2,841 service members who died while serving during the World War II North Africa campaign. The objects in this collection are from The U.S. National Archives and Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was established in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt. NARA keeps those Federal records that are judged to have continuing value—about 2 to 5 percent of those generated in any given year.
