Summary
This illustration entitled "An Advantage in Reach and Pull", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on August 12, 1898, shows the naval career ladder being scaled by William T. Sampson and Winfield S. Schley to replace the retiring chief officer of the U.S. Navy's North Atlantic Squadron, with the taller Schley getting a rung up and ultimately being chosen.
