Summary
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Capt. Sheryl Dickinson, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg commanding officer, pins the Coast Guard Commendation Medal on Tom Thorne, son of Seaman James L. Thorne, at an award ceremony at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Oct. 4, 2011.
After 68 years, Thorne was recognized for his courageous actions extinguishing a fire aboard the USS EL Estero moored in New York Harbor in 1943. His actions averted an explosion that would have caused a catastrophic loss of life.
