First Sergeant David A. McKinley, the Alpha Battery first sergeant with 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, retrieves the U.S. flag with Staff Sgt. James Jordan, an engineer section chief with Headquarters Battery, 11th Marine Regiment, during the sunset ceremony at the Parliament House here, June 14. McKinley, 37-year-old native of Cincinnati, presented the flag to Prime Minister of New Zealand John Key. Government and military officials of the United States and New Zealand commemorated the 70th anniversary of the arrival of U.S. forces in Wellington during World War II. Australian and New Zealand forces were conducting heavy fighting in Northern Africa in 1942 while U.S. forces played a significant role in the defense of Oceania. Galvanic Kiwi is a U.S. Marine Corps and New Zealand Army training exchange designed to enhance interoperability and foster military-to-military relations between the U.S. and New Zealand.
