The Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld, right, U.S. Secretary of Defense, watches while students from Grandville High School, South Kansas City, Mo., reenact events of the early days of the Korean War during his visit at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Mo., on March 2, 2006. The purpose of his visit was to pay tribute to the first U.S. president of the Cold War era and to consider what lessons might be drawn from that important period in our history. PROUD PROFESSIONAL PREPARED. ARMED FORCES DAY 1993. In honor of the 43rd Anniversary when President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration was a result of the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense. Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May
