Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit use
Summary
Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit use heavy equipment to move a local fisherman’s undamaged boat to the harbor area, allowing him to start to rebuild his way of life. Marines are participating in Operation Field Day, a clearing and cleanup project designed to open harbor access and area roads on the isolated island. As Marines cleared the area, they took time to locate personal items which could be salvaged by the local residents. The 31st MEU is participating in Operation Tomodachi at the request of the Japanese government after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeast coast of Japan.
