Members of the National Science Foundation (NSF) load a C-141B Starlifter, from 8th Airlift Squadron, McChord Air Force Base, Washington, at Christchurch, New Zealand, on their way to McMurdo Sound Base, Antarctica, during DEEP FREEZE '98. The NSF members are a group of volunteers ranging from biological scientists to mail administers who spend five to fifteen months studying Antarctic life. The US Air Force is their primary way of making it to the "Ice."
