The excavation site forms part of an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery complex first identified in 1956 and continues on from work carried out on different parts of the site. The present excavation has so far revealed 50 graves dating from a period between the late fifth and early seventh centuries, which brings the total of burials found in this area to more than 400
