description

Summary

S.C. National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Greg Castles, Det.1, Co. B, 2-238th General Support Aviation Battalion, 59th Aviation Troop Command, perform routine maintenance on "368," a CH-47D Chinook helicopter ready for its last flight, Fort Drum, NY, Aug.18, 2016. Call sign “Guard Copter 368” was one of the few CH-47D originally built as “true D-models,” at the end of the First Gulf War. 368 served with Det.1 for the last ten years, to include the 2009 and 2013 deployments to Afghanistan; during its service, “368” earned a reputation for reliability and sturdiness among the unit’s pilots, maintainers and crew-chiefs. This last mission included a brief stop at Fort Drum, NY, where one of the two crews received from the 10th Mountain Division a newer CH-47F, as a replacement for their retiring D-model.
