STS061-86-061 - STS-061 - Various views of the capture and first EVA to repair the HST

description

Summary

The original finding aid described this as:

Description: The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is pictured in the STS-61 orbiter Endeavour's payload bay following its capture and berthing early in the eleven-day mission. The Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, used to grapple the HST into the payload bay can also be seen in the frame (024-32). Astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman are pictured near the end of the first of five STS-61 space walks. Musgrave works at the Solar Array Carrier (SAC) in the Space Shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay. Hoffman, anchored to a foot restraint mounted on the end of Endeavour's RMS arm, waits to be maneuvered to the forward payload bay. The original solar array panels are partially visible at top, while their replacements remain stowed in the foreground (024-5, 047-58). Musgrave enters the open bay on the -V3 side of the HST while Hoffman waits on the RMS arm (026-37, 043-6). Hoffman and Musgrave both work on the end of the RMS arm (038-42). Hoffman on the end of the RMS arm, works in Bay G of the -V3 side of the HST (059-75). Dark, close-up view of Hoffman on the end of the RMS arm (076-9). Dark view of the empty RMS arm on the right side of the frame, the Earth in the background and the HST on the left (080-5). Dark view of the top of the HST with the RMS arm in the foreground (086). View of the HST in the center of the frame with the RMS Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR) workstation attached to the arm directly in front of the HST with an Earth limb in the background (087-90, 094-101). View of the -V3 side of the HST in the payload bay (overexposed and some window reflection) (091-3). Views 030 and 048 were selected by PAO for release to the public.
