U.S. and Spanish forces embark on an over-the-horizon amphibious insertion as part of Spanish Amphibious Bilateral Exercise (PHIBLEX) 2014 aboard the USS Bataan (LHD 5), at sea, Feb. 22, 2014. The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is participating in Spanish PHIBLEX 2014 alongside Portuguese Marines and Spanish Marines in order to build global maritime partnerships with European nations and improve maritime safety and security. The MEU is deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet areas of responsibility with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group as a sea-based, expeditionary crisis response force capable of conducting amphibious missions across the full range of military operations.
