U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Burton Francisco, right, assistant adjutant general and commander, Michigan National Guard, speaks with U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Operation Onward Liberty is a group of approximately 50 U.S. military personnel who mentor and advise the AFL in order to develop a national military that is responsible, operationally capable, respectful of civilian authority and the rule of law and is a force for good among the Liberian people. While in Liberia, Francisco toured AFL bases, spoke with OOL members and attended a military ball in celebration of Liberia’s 55th annual Armed Forces Day. The Michigan National Guard plays a large role in the development of the AFL as part of the National Guard Bureau’s state partnership program. Jones is deployed from 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune, N.C. and Wilford is deployed from the 149th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
