The nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) is now operating in the Persian Gulf region. The NIMITZ will remain on station in the gulf to enforce United Nations sanctions against Iraq, by patrolling the No-Fly zone during Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. The carrier battle group was directed to the Gulf early by the Secretary of Defense, after Iraqi planes breached the zone several times in the last week.
