This #FortRileyFriday we continue our look at facilities constructed around the garrison headquarters, building 500. This area of post is historically known as the Hospital/Post Headquarters District.
Quarters 507 Holbrook Avenue was built 1891, two years after the completion of the original north wing of building 500. It was designated as “Hospital Stewards Quarters” and was constructed with wood walls and floors, a stone foundation and a wood shingle roof. The residence was heated with wood burning stoves.
According to #FortRiley Directorate of Public Works (DPW) maintenance records, by 1930 the home had been upgraded with steam heat fired by a gas burning stove and the wood shingles had been replaced with tin.
The Army Corps of Engineers considers quarters 507 historically significant as an example of a wood-framed Folk Victorian house. While it is one of four Folk Victorian houses on post, the other three are of brick construction.
Today, as it did when originally built, quarters 507 continues to serve as a single family home.
