Summary
A memorial stone was dedicated today at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific honoring 400 service men who perished aboard Japanese cargo ships that were bombed in a Taiwanese harbor. The remains of the servicemen many of whom were activated Army National Officers were initially buried near Takao Harbor but were reinterred in Hawaii in 1946. The 400 men were among thousands of prisoners of war taken by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1942. The POWs on the Enoura Maru included, in addition to Americans, soldiers and mariners from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, and what is now the Czech Republic.
