Summary
A Tunisian air force airman inspects a box during a foreign military sales mission at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, Jan. 28, 2021. The U.S. was the first major power to recognize Tunisian sovereignty and established relations with Tunisia in 1956 following its independence from France. Since then, Tunisia has become an even more critical partner and a major non-NATO ally, which entails military and economic privileges and is a powerful symbol of the close relationship between the U.S. and Tunisia. Tunisia was among the first to recognize the newly independent U.S. during that time. Due to its strategic geographic location, Dover AFB supports approximately $3.5 billion worth of FMS operations annually.
