Summary
A young student practices writing Arabic during a remedial literacy class offered at Wifaq, a children’s school in Ain Issa, Syria, May 16, 2018. Prior to the defeat of ISIS, schools in the area were largely evacuated and shut down for nearly five years. Wifaq opened with the support of the U.S. State Department last year and now offers education for remedial literacy and psychosocial support programs. Wifaq’s overall reach continues to expand into the thousands with their psychosocial support mobile units that travel to various locations, including Internally Displaced Persons-camps. The school is exploring options to expand their programs with seven additional learning centers to open in Raqqah. Reintegrating children into society through education and socialization is another step toward normalcy for future generations in Syria. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Brigitte Morgan)
