Army Maj. Bryant Schumacher, the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan Recruiting Assistance team chief, greets an elder from Kapisa province at a recruiting leadership conference, Feb. 16. The conference was attended by over 200 elders, mullahs and members of parliament from all six districts Kapisa province, which is in eastern Afghanistan. Officers from the Afghan national army recruiting command believe that speaking to those leaders at events like this is the most effective way to recruit young men for the ANA, and they successfully gained 113 recruits for the ANA and three for the Afghan national police from Kapisa last month.
