AS04-01-580 - Apollo 4 - Apollo 4 Mission - Atlantic Ocean,coastal Brazil,West Africa and Antarctica
Summary
The original database describes this as:
Description: Earth as viewed from 10,000 miles. In 1969, the Apollo 4 (Spacecraft 017/Saturn 501) unmanned test flight made a great ellipse around the Earth as a test of the translunar motors and of the high speed entry required of a manned flight returning from the Moon. A 70mm camera was programmed to look out a window toward the Earth, and take a series of photographs from "high apogee". Coastal Brazil, Atlantic Ocean, west Africa, Antarctica, looking west. The camera system was activated by a gravity switch set for G=3. It is possible that it was activated by the initial vibration at lift-off. Therefore times and altitudes are approximate but within one minute of true. Photo was taken during the third revolution. Film type was SO-368 Ektachrome,70mm color,76mm lens. G.E.T time was 6:11, Altitude was 9622 nautical miles (17,821 kilometers).
