US COAST GUARD BERTHOLF AWARD WASHINGTON DC
Summary
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 17, 2004)--Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thomas H. Collins presents Sen. John Breaux the Commodore Ellsworth P. Bertholf Award. "Senator Breaux has been a key advocate of the Coast Guard and its missions," said Admiral Collins. The annual Commodore Ellsworth P. Bertholf Award is named in honor of the officer who successfully consolidated the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915 and served as the first commandant of the modern U.S. Coast Guard. The award-a traditional "watch glass" telescope which symbolizes nautical heritage and long-range vision-honors members of Congress whose leadership supports the men and women of the Coast Guard and the service's many missions.
