Col. Tye R. Wallace, commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, presents the sword of office to Sgt. Maj. Edwin Mota, oncoming sergeant major of the 31st MEU, during a post and relief ceremony at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, April 27, 2018. Sgt. Maj. Jim Lanham relinquished his post as sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. Edwin Mota during the ceremony. Mota arrived at the 31st MEU after serving at 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. Lanham is slated to assume duties as sergeant major of 12th Marine Corps District at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. During Lanham’s tenure, the 31st MEU supported several exercises across the Indo-Pacific region, including Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise, Exercise Cobra Gold in Thailand and Exercise Talisman Saber in Australia.
